Cashless is the biggest trend for parking, not only for casual and season parking but also in valet parking. However, in valet parking, parking attendants interact with parkers when they leave and collect back their cars. Hence, the option of cash collection, in addition to cashless, is one of TimeTec's key features for valet parking management system.
Regarding the cashless feature, TimeTec valet parking offers eWallet payment, credit card, and debit card options via the TimeTec Valet Handheld POS terminal. This terminal comes preloaded with the TimeTec Valet App and is embedded with a high-speed thermal printer for receipt printing.
TimeTec Cashless Valet Parking offers several benefits for both parking operators and users. Here are some advantages:
Benefits for Parking Operators:
Increased Efficiency: • Cashless systems streamline the payment process, reducing the time it takes for users to pay for parking. • Faster transactions lead to quicker turnover, allowing operators to serve more customers in a given time.
Reduced Risk of Theft and Fraud: • Handling less cash reduces the risk of theft for both the parking attendants and the facility. • Cashless transactions are generally more secure and can be easily tracked, minimizing the risk of fraud.
Improved Record Keeping: • Electronic payment systems automatically record transactions, providing operators with detailed and accurate financial records. • This makes accounting and auditing processes more efficient and less prone to errors.
Better Resource Planning: • Cashless systems can provide operators with valuable data on peak usage times and customer behavior, enabling more effective resource allocation and staffing.
Integration with TimeTec Cloud Parking Management Software: • Cashless systems can be integrated with TimeTec Cloud Parking Management software, allowing operators to monitor and manage their parking facilities more effectively.
Benefits for Users: Convenience: • Cashless valet parking eliminates the need for users to carry cash, making the parking process more convenient and user-friendly. • Users can pay with credit/debit cards, eWallet mobile apps, or other electronic payment methods.
Faster Transactions: • Electronic payments are faster than cash transactions, reducing the time users spend in the payment process and allowing them to get on with their day more quickly.
Enhanced Security: • Users don't have to worry about carrying and handling cash, reducing the risk of theft. • Electronic transactions are often more secure, with encryption and authentication measures in place.
Contactless Transactions: • In the context of public health concerns (such as during a pandemic), cashless transactions can be contactless, reducing the risk of virus transmission.
Overall, cashless valet parking systems contribute to a more efficient, secure, and convenient parking experience for both operators and users. If parking operators also operate casual and season parking as well, they will enjoy better benefits by managing different parking methods all under one TimeTec Parking Management System at the backend.
These are the parking sites using TimeTec Valet Parking System:

Most of the modern city dwellers are experiencing the time-waste searching for parking space. According to Boston Consulting Group (BCG) research,
people in Kuala Lumpur spend 25 minutes every day searching for a
parking spot. It usually happens at bustling malls. It is even more
frustrating when a patron circles the entire parking site and finally
finds a “prey” to see it being snatched away by a quicker “predator”. To
solve the problem, TimeTec encourages car park owners to consider
adopting a parking guidance system.
“TimeTec offers two types of Parking Guidance System, the first is Video Parking Guidance System, which deploys License Plate Recognition (LPR) technology; the second is Ultrasonic Parking Guidance System, which uses Ultrasonic wave technology.
Both are meant to guide users to park their cars effortlessly; hence
effectively reduce the search time for parking, increase the parking
utilization rate and mitigate congestion,” explained Teh Hon Seng, CEO
of TimeTec Group.
“Since the Video Parking Guidance System is
using LPR, it’s natural to be using LPR as the main parking entry and
exit method if a carpark owner chooses this guidance system. On the
other hand, for Ultrasonic Parking Guidance System, the carpark owner
can choose various parking entry and exit methods including the LPR.”
Both
Guidance Systems can work standalone, and they can also fully integrate
with the TimeTec Smart Parking Management System to provide better
feature extension.
The comparison between the two parking guidance systems:

Teh
Hon Seng said, “The Video Parking Guidance System has an extra
advantage to solve the shared-carpark environment issue to discern the
parking income for different business entities. For example, when a
shopping mall is sharing the same parking site with a hotel, users can
come in from the hotel’s parking entrance but park at the shopping
mall’s parking lots and leave via the shopping mall’s exit, and vice
versa. As a result, they have difficulty splitting the parking income.
But because the Video Parking Guidance System embedded License Plate
Recognition (LPR) technology, it can identify where a vehicle parks
regardless of its entry and exit points. Moreover, with the ownership of
parking bays clearly defined in the TimeTec Smart Parking Management
System, the parking income is tabulated without any mistake.”
“Furthermore,
shopping malls can also integrate their mall apps to the Parking
Guidance System to extend the Parking Bay Availability Check and Find My
Car features to the user’s smartphones.”
The benefits of the TimeTec Integrated Video Parking Guidance System are summarized as follow:

“In the third article of the TimeTec Smart Parking series (3 of 12) on Malaysiakini, we've discussed the Past, Present & Future of parking system, where we foresee the possible demise of parking system in the next twenty to thirty years when the roads were mostly taken over by autonomous cars and e-hailing services.” Teh Hon Seng, TimeTec Group CEO, explains the future of the parking industry.
“Even when the prediction is correct, the incessant technology advancement will still keep on improving, renewing and refining the parking system before that.”
“Undoubtedly, the growth of e-hailing companies such as Uber, Lyft, Didi, Grab, etc., will largely impact the parking industry because users will not require any parking space at the intended destination, besides the options of other public transport systems. But statistics still show that in America alone, there are 500 million parking spaces for 326 million citizens spread across 3.5 million square miles of parking infrastructure. More parking spaces than the population are not because some car owners own more than one car, but mainly because cars require more parking spaces when transporting people from one place to another.”
An estimated 30 percent of traffic congestion each year is contributed by drivers searching for one of these parking spots. According to Boston Consulting Group (BCG) research, people in Kuala Lumpur spend 25 minutes every day searching for parking. Another problem is, for a city where people and vehicles congregated, the land is expensive. It seems like the carpark is still that necessary evil that would be stretched for another one to two decades.
Teh Hon Seng said, “Parking technology is transforming the ticket and cash system to ticketless, cashless and touchless system. The future development inevitably will focus on reducing the time to look for parking spots and efficiently managing the parking sites to optimize utilization. In short, towards an automated smart parking direction. As one of the pioneers in developing the smart parking system, TimeTec will continue the efforts towards the same direction.”
Imagine a future that combines an automated valet parking system where you can step out of your car in front of a shopping mall with a single App, communicate the car with the parking site and the digital building system to allow your car to quickly find a parking space, via the easiest route and park on its own. Research in 2018 by University of Toronto researchers found that automated technology could increase the capacity of parking sites by 62 percent. Mercedes-Benz and Bosch even have a trial smart parking program in the works in Stuttgart, Germany. Here is the full demo for the automated valet parking video:
The digital transformation for parking solutions is an ongoing process to establish more connectivity, better efficiency and smarter sustainability. For parking owners, it’s time to think beyond the parking system.

There is a famous valet parking joke based on a true story in the 60s, and it goes like this, "One night Frank Sinatra, the singer, walked out of The Peninsula Hotel and asked a valet parking attendant, 'What was the biggest tip you ever got?' When he said, '$100, Mr Sinatra,' the singer handed him $200 and then asked, 'Who gave you the $100 tip?' The attendant replied, 'It was you, Mr Sinatra.'"
Amazingly, some valet attendants do not only know their clients in person, but they are also well-trained and knowledgeable about nearly every make and model of vehicles, including the alarm systems and keyless ignitions, if not more.
"For parking business owner, valet parking is offered as an extra parking service or a separate entity to customers due to the skills set needed in valet attendants. Still, valet parking is treated as a non-core parking business compared to normal casual and season parking, and its parking module is never the main core module in a parking management system. Even though most parking sites are not offering valet services, for some hotels, nightclubs, hospitals, and shopping malls, valet parking is a compulsory service because valet parking adds a touch of luxury and convenience to car owners. What kind of a 5-star hotel does not provide valet parking service?" asked Teh Hon Seng, TimeTec Group CEO.
"In general, valet parking provides convenience and class. Patrons don't have to drive around looking for parking spots. Those who are in a hurry can leave their vehicles safely in the hands of the valet attendants; plus, it is handy for disabled drivers, and those who own luxury cars would want to arrive in style everywhere they go."
"In short, valet is a service created by inequalities of supply and demand. Valet offers an extra service for vehicle owners to park their cars safely, conveniently and instantly, and sometimes with style," said Teh.
Teh also stressed that valet parking is one of the TimeTec Smart Parking System modules to help valet parking owner eliminate the cash handling risk and be in line with the cashless trend. The operators that cover complete parking services can consolidate the parking revenues from casual, season, enforcement, and valet, all under one cloud platform.
TimeTec Valet Parking System comes together with two handheld TimeTec Valet POS terminals, with a built-in receipt printer that is PCI DSS compliance and accepting credit and debit card and e-Wallet cashless payment methods. In addition, bringing more convenience to customers, the receipt printer of TimeTec Valet Parking System also prints a QR code as an option for customers to scan and pay for the valet before picking up their car. The illustration below shows the process flow:

When the parking system started to move from cash to cashless, what are the significant differences besides the absence of physical currency? To be precise, the cash payment form is loosely attached to the parking system; the relationship is just in its tallying process. The complication of cash handling happens outside the parking system. After manually tallying the cash with the system, the off-system cash handling includes the risk of temporarily keeping the cash and transporting it to the bank by trusted personnel. Overall, it is a tedious daily routine.
In contrast, in a cashless system, the complication happens inside the system, where there is almost no “handling” job required for the cashless money after the system collects the fees. Instead, there are settlements between the bank/payment gateway provider and the parking owner/operator behind the scene, with the terms and conditions signed before adopting the cashless system.
TimeTec Group CEO Teh Hon Seng elaborated further on the complexity of cashless in parking systems, “Indeed, more security concerns when moving cash to a cashless system. The pivotal issues like protecting the electronic transaction data such as credit cards and mobile data between participating parties and avoiding the violation of personal data have to be addressed. The good thing is that all the related matters are taken care of in the highly regulated online payment system. For example, the use of credit cards in parking as cashless payment, it required The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard or PCI DSS compliance for its parking terminals.”
Teh Hon Seng explained the differences between cashless parking system and cashless merchant system, “It is far more complicated for a parking system to accommodate cashless payment than the normal merchant system. For example, the e-Wallet providers can go all out to acquire merchants. However, they can’t simply knock on the parking operators’ door and sign them up as merchants because the e-wallet must be seamlessly integrated with the parking access system. Besides, the parking transaction is not as simple as picking up merchandise and paying it according to the price tag when checking out. The date and time of a car entering a parking site have to be recorded, and the fee calculation is based on the duration and parking rate set by the parking owner when checking out. Furthermore, when the customers check in, the system has to verify the validity of the payment card and whether it has sufficient funds to pay when he/she checks out. That explains why the parking operator is charged a slightly higher MDR (Merchant Discount Rate) than normal merchants.”
The parking access cum cashless payment system flow is illustrated in the following diagram:
Touch ‘n Go card is one of its kind for parking payment systems. The payment process flow is almost similar to the credit/debit card, and it is more widely used than credit/debit card in Malaysia’s parking industry.
The main advantage of the above cashless payment system embedded into the parking access system is that there is no payment process between entry and exit.
When the License Plate Recognition or LPR is used as a parking access method, the cashless payment system is less attached. The common practice now is that the back-end parking system will link to an online payment portal consolidated with multiple payment methods. The customer can choose which payment method he/she prefers before exiting the parking site.
Teh Hon Seng said, “As one of the pioneers that provide cashless parking solutions, TimeTec Smart Parking System caters to all the above. Besides providing the unattended parking kiosk that combines Touch ‘n Go solution, credit/debit reader and QR code reader for e-Wallet into one kiosk, we are also an expert in LPR parking solution, and its payment system.”

Season parking allows the car owner to park his/her car regularly, near his/her home or workplace, at a fixed and always discounted monthly rate. Even at a discounted rate, season parking income is steadier than casual parking. Season parking as part of the parking management system is always considered less challenging than casual parking.
This is not true.
In fact, in terms of daily operation, yes, season parking would pose a lesser problem because season parkers are "known" customers, easier to manage, and casual parkers are random; anything can happen. But in terms of the system, season parking is far more complicated. Because of the "known" user and a special discount provided, it kind of becomes a member. Hence, the season parking system is also a sort of 'membership' system; it has an application form, issuance of a special pass, deposit collection, monthly payment, overdue payment, 'membership' renewal, and termination. Besides individual 'members', it has group 'members', and their company pays their monthly 'membership' fees. And to add to the complication, it may have different types of 'membership', different parking rates, either with a dedicated or non-dedicated parking lot. Some parking sites even have nested parking areas for season parkers.
None of the above matters for the casual parkers; just set the parking rate; it applies to all.
As TimeTec Parking Management System is a cloud-based system and App-enabled, it provides more features for season parking such as interactive capability likes payment reminders, online application, online payment, renewal, etc. It supports RFID cards, TNG cards, QR codes, and License Plate Recognition (LPR) for season parking access. When a parking site uses a QR code or LPR as season parking access, it can save the card issuance, and all administrative processes can be done over the internet.
Teh Hon Seng, Founder and CEO of TimeTec Group
"There is a common problem faced by commercial buildings during peak hours when casual mixed with season parking. If parking lots are dedicated to season parkers, during peak hours, casual parkers would have difficulty finding parking even though there are still quite a lot of empty lots overhung with car plate numbers belonging to season parkers. What a waste! But in contrast, if parking bays are non-dedicated, season parkers would be upset by not finding a place to park their cars during peak hours while paying their monthly fees." Said TimeTec Group CEO, Teh Hon Seng.
"How to balance the two requires arithmetic skills. TimeTec Smart Parking System caters for both parking types, and it is built-in with an analytic data module. Consolidating the peak hours can help to optimize the bay's allotment for season parking to ease traffic and reduce wait time at the parking site."
He said, "To further reduce the unutilized season parking lots freed for casual parking during peak hours, it allows season parkers to notify parking operators about the availability. It is even better when integrated with TimeTec Smart Workforce System such as TimeTec TA for time attendance and TimeTec Leave for leave management. The system can auto-release the season parking lots when season parkers applied for leave, work from home or outstation, with the pre-consent agreement signed between season parkers and the parking operator at a certain discount rate for season pass renewal."

Seldom parking operation cares about pre-entry and the next activities; parking should be just some brief happenings at the entry and exit, plus the payment process. As long as it is free from any hiccups, it is considered a sound enough parking system.
But digital technology provides possibilities to link parking with other related activities, from pre-entry to the next activities after a driver parks his/her vehicle. For example, it would be great if a parking system can provide an availability check before we even step out of our home, letting us know that the car park is full rather than finding it out once we reached the destination.
It is even better to secure a parking bay before we arrive at a bustling mall by the likes of Booking a Spot for a movie. If we are VIP customers of a merchant, we get a parking bay reserved when we confirm an appointment. It is even great if the merchant or the host company can absorb the parking fee to display better hospitability.
All of the above pre-entry features are impossible without a cloud parking solution. The next activities after the car has been parked are more abundant. We list down the following as a reference:
From a security perspective, TimeTec Parking System can integrate with the TimeTec Guard Patrol system. Therefore, when a user presses a panic button on a Mall App/Parking App, it will trigger the mobile device of the patrol guard on duty at the parking site. And simultaneously, the parking office's alarm will go off. Because the data includes the GPS coordinates, the guard can quickly identify the user location to dispatch a rescue at once.
More possibilities could have happened for commercial shopping malls if shopping malls have their app for consumers to download. The integration between the parking system and the mall App can provide more interaction and better consumer engagement. They can extend a discount or offset of parking fee to different merchants, push dynamic and targeted ad whenever customers enter a car park, book a spot, find my car, parking records and receipts; all are illustrated in the integration chart as follow:
For commercial office towers, parking can be treated as the threshold for the entire people flow, extending to other access points such as doors, turnstiles and lifts. When TimeTec Parking integrates with TimeTec Visitor Management System, the system can notify the host when the guest enters the parking. Suppose it bridged with TimeTec TA for time attendance and TimeTec Leave for a busy office tower. In that case, the parking operator could free the season parking spaces whenever season parkers take leave or work from home or go outstation. Hence, parking operators can manage the occupancy of the parking site to its fullest.
For high-security buildings like a science laboratory, military offices, etc., the management can set parking access denied mode if employees try to access at non-working hours when the parking system is integrated with the TimeTec Smart Workforce Management solution.

Unlike on-street parking, the off-street parking system is hardware intensive, requiring heavy investment in hardware equipment. Although the advancement of technology has largely brought down the hardware cost over the years, hardware investment is still quite significant when it comes to pricing. Besides, in its operation, another noteworthy part of expenditure still goes to hardware maintenance.
Despite the hardware cost, the software plays a more critical role in a parking system to ensure the success of parking deployment, especially when cashless and touchless are becoming the new trend that requires a revamping of software from its foundation. A shift from purely on-premise Windows-based/Web-based software to include a cloud platform is inevitable.
TimeTec Parking Management System, or PMS as its acronym, intends to change the hardware-driven parking industry to emphasize software as the main driver in the digital transformation era.
“The parking requirements for commercial office towers and shopping malls are almost identical in general. Both need a system that can cater for casual and season parking. However, because the traffic is heavier in shopping malls and they receive more random visitors, the parking system has to tailor and accommodate the nature of its operation to suit different environments. For example, shopping malls would prefer more in-depth data analytics that can provide descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, prescriptive and preemptive analysis than office towers. Furthermore, promo code and validation tied up with shopper’s purchase activities are essential for shopping malls, and they need more flexible parking rules.” TimeTec CEO Teh Hon Seng elaborated how software should handle the differences in parking operations.
He continued, “Whereas office towers emphasize more on season pass subscriptions, renewals, nested parking, etc. for both tenant companies and individuals; even casual parking is equally important, less variety of parking methods are normally offered to users if compared to shopping malls. And for hotels, besides casual parking, they normally require valet parking. To ease the management, building owners that owned multiple buildings should ensure that their parking system can manage multiple parking sites at different locations. And, some buildings may impose fines for haphazard parkers, the same parking system should have the enforcement module.”
“The good news is, the comprehensiveness of TimeTec PMS covers all of the above and more. Another advantage of TimeTec PMS is that it supports a wide range of front-end parking and payment methods. This benefit helps the operator to generate just one report by consolidating all the data from different parking methods and payments to ease administration.”
